BSL/English Interpreters
We recognise that it can be difficult for Deaf BSL users and hearing people to fully understand one another in real time. BSL Interpreters are trained communication professionals who facilitate two‑way communication by converting spoken English into British Sign Language and vice versa, accurately conveying meaning, tone, and intent.
Who benefits from BSL Interpreting?
BSL Interpreters provide vital access for Deaf people whose preferred or first language is BSL, enabling them to participate on an equal basis with hearing peers. They also support hearing professionals, colleagues, friends, and family members who need to communicate clearly with Deaf BSL users.
What does a BSL Interpreter do?
BSL Interpreters can offer communication support in a wide range of contexts, such as:
Conferences: Ensuring Deaf attendees can follow presentations, ask questions, and network effectively alongside hearing participants.
Education: Interpreting lectures, seminars, tutorials, and campus events so Deaf students can access teaching and fully engage in academic life.
Events: Working at performances, talks, and public events where multiple speakers or fast‑paced interaction require real‑time interpretation.
Employment: Supporting job interviews, staff meetings, supervision, training, and client interactions so Deaf employees and employers can communicate clearly.
Community Settings: Enabling participation in groups, courses, religious services, and social activities within the wider community.
Health, Legal, and Council Services: Interpreting in medical appointments, legal settings, and public service meetings so Deaf people can understand information, express their views, and make informed decisions.
All our BSL Interpreters are appropriately qualified and registered, and they follow a strict professional code of conduct covering confidentiality, impartiality, and ethical practice to ensure services are accurate, respectful, and trustworthy.
